Mugo Pines are a great alternative to the commonly used Junipers! They're for bonsai lovers who want a different kind of evergreen in their collection. Even those that live in colder areas can easily come to love this species!
Like their similar looking cousins, the Japanese Black Pines, Mugo Pines have dark green color with dense short length needles. They have a fresh pine smell all year round! Even better is that they're much easier to maintain so beginners can practice with them too.
During the spring, new growth shoots almost straight up at the tips of the horizontal stems to form “candles.” They're much lighter in color than the older foliage. The candles form an attractive accent that rises above the rest of the tree. Cutting or breaking off the candles can result in denser branch ramification growth during the summer. Mature Mugo Pines will develop a scaley brown-gray bark and can even produce small ornamental brown cones to boost their visual appeal.
