Once you've decided on which direction you want a branch to grow and the usual bonsai training wire doesn't seem strong enough to move it, then you need to use a branch bender. Branch benders are the heavy duty option of putting bends and curves into older and thicker branches.
Sometimes it's better to use some rope to create a downward slope for cascade and semi-cascade style bonsai trees.
