About Us

We’re House of Bonsai – a Southern California based family owned small business that’s been growing and selling bonsai trees for over 30 years. We are looking for people that truly enjoy bonsai and are willing to work with us on creating beautiful living pieces of art on our 5.3 acre property outdoors. The bonsai nursery is located right in between Los Angeles County & Orange County to reach a wide audience of bonsai enthusiasts from beginners to advanced bonsai masters. We try to create all sizes and shapes of bonsai; some that can fit in your hand to huge ones for your yard. We also curate a large inventory of bonsai supplies (such as bonsai pots, soil, tools, training wire, accessories, etc) that we import from overseas for public sale.

To Be Considered for Hiring

Please note that you must be willing to bring a paper copy of your resume in person by visiting the store. No online resume submissions will be accepted! You must be at least 18 years of age to interview. We are doing only walk-in interviews on a first come, first serve basis during regular business hours. Once you come into the Main Greenhouse at the front of the store, we can give you an in-person interview right away with the owner. We do not have any remote positions available. All positions must be fulfilled in person at our physical store location at 5214 Palo Verde Ave Lakewood, CA 90713. We’re open from Monday through Saturday from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm and closed on Sunday. We can give you a fast response on if you’re hired or not!

  • Flexible Work Schedules (i.e. if you need to leave to go pick up your kids, go to school or go to doctor’s appointments, just give us a heads up and go take care of yourself and/or your family).
  • Open to Increases in Hourly Pay Based on Work Performance – If you’re good with bonsai, we will compensate you for your higher end skills!
  • Working outdoors in open air environment; mainly just you and a bunch of trees everywhere, very zen.
  • Very small staff – don’t need to memorize a bunch of names.
  • No HR – Just let the owner know of your concerns and we will take care of the issue head on. Open and direct communication with the boss.
  • If you have a medical or at-home emergency, let us know and go take care of stuff. You won’t get in trouble for leaving to ensure your safety and/or your loved one’s safety. Your job will still be there for you when you come back!

Outdoor Plant Nursery Field Worker Job Details (Multiple Wanted)

Prerequisites:

  • Must be able to lift at least 40 lbs comfortably by yourself – maximum 65 lbs on rare occasion
  • Must be willing to lift up to 100+ lbs in a team lift with another person
  • Must be vaccinated against COVID-19 as entire current staff already has been
  • Must be able to bring their own wide brimmed hat and large water bottle to maintain personal supply of water to stay hydrated during work outdoors
  • Must be able to wear sun protective clothing such as long sleeved shirts, long pants and comfortable walking shoes or work boots
  • Note that work gloves and set of work tools will be issued to you by owner
  • Previous agriculture or horticulture experience is a plus but not necessary
  • Previous experience with Bonsai is a plus but not necessary
  • Forklift driving experience is a plus but not necessary

 

Common Daily Tasks During Job: Watering, Trimming, Pruning, Repotting, Transplanting, Pulling & Removing Weeds, Moving Small to Large Plants & Trees, Mixing Soil, Bagging Soil, Planting Seedling & Saplings into Small Pots, etc.

Occasional Tasks During Job: Giving fertilizer to the trees, digging big holes in the ground to plant larger trees, assist on delivering large trees to customer’s homes off-site, etc.

 

 

 

Shipping & Packing Specialist Job Details (1 to 2 Wanted)

Prerequisites:

  • Must be able to lift at least 40 lbs comfortably by yourself – maximum 65 lbs on rare occasion
  • Must be willing to lift up to 100+ lbs in a team lift with another person
  • Must have at least 1 year of experience in shipping and packaging (i.e. knows how to pack products into a cardboard box with protective packaging using foam & air bags, knows how to tape box shut and apply special labels as needed, etc)
  • Must be familiar with basic shipping protocols (i.e. how to properly stack boxes up high without crushing package contents, etc)
  • Must be vaccinated against COVID-19 as entire current staff already has been
  • Must be able to bring their own wide brimmed hat and large water bottle to maintain personal supply of water to stay hydrated during work outdoors
  • Must be able to wear sun protective clothing such as long sleeved shirts, long pants and comfortable walking shoes or work boots
  • Note that work gloves and set of work tools will be issued to you by owner
  • Must be willing to be flexible and do some of the “Outdoor Field Worker” tasks during shifts to assist in rushes
  • Familiarity with online order fulfillment through e-Commerce platforms such as eBay, Shopify & BigCommerce are a plus but not necessary
  • Familiarity with creating shipping labels is a plus but not necessary
  • Having a valid CA Driver’s License with a clean driving record is a plus but not necessary to drop off packages during rushes when owner isn’t able to
  • Previous agriculture or horticulture experience is a plus but not necessary
  • Previous experience with Bonsai is a plus but not necessary
  • Forklift driving experience is a plus but not necessary

 

 

 

Plant Nursery Supervisor Job Details (1 Wanted)

Mandatory Prerequisites:

  • Must be able to speak both English and Spanish fluently
  • Must have at least 2 years of previous agriculture or horticulture experience
  • Must be able to lift at least 50 lbs comfortably by yourself (75+ lbs by yourself is preferred)
  • Must be able to lift at least 100 lbs in a team lift with another person
  • Must be vaccinated against COVID-19 as entire current staff already has been
  • Must have valid CA Driver’s License with clean driving record to assist in driving for Deliveries and Online Order Package drop offs to USPS/UPS/FedEx.
  • Must have basic computer usage in workplace knowledge
  • Must be willing to be flexible to do job tasks of all other roles to assist during rushes
  • Must be able to bring their own wide brimmed hat and large water bottle to maintain personal supply of water to stay hydrated during work outdoors
  • Must be able to wear sun protective clothing such as long sleeved shirts, long pants and comfortable walking shoes or work boots
  • Note that work gloves and set of work tools will be issued to you by owner

Preferred Pluses But Not Necessary:

  • Able to Operate a Forklift
  • Experience in Bonsai
  • Experience in Plant Propagation and Plant Grafting
  • Experience in Asian Garden Landscaping
  • Experience in Product Photography on Plants & Trees

 

 

 

Pay/Wage Compensation Details

  • Starting Rate $14.00 per hour for All New Hire Roles except Supervisor
  • All new hire roles are open to opportunities to get higher hourly pay based upon work performance once hired
  • Supervisor starting hourly rate can be discussed during interview based upon verifiable experience and skills
  • All employees are paid on a bi-weekly basis

 

 

 

COVID-19 Precautions We’re Taking

  • All current staff members have been vaccinated against COVID-19
  • Sanitizing and wiping down commonly used surfaces throughout the day
  • Doing multiple restroom cleanings daily
  • Mandatory that all staff members must wear masks when interacting closely with customers
