Chamaecyparis obtusa 'Chirimen' is a dwarf form of a Hinoki Cypress/Hinoki Falsecypress that's named after the wrinkly silk crepe fabric used to make traditional Japanese kimonos. This cultivar grows visually interesting clusters of upright, irregular shoots in a variety of semi-twisted spire-like shapes and colors. The color is primarily a rich deep green but, depending on growth conditions, they can have greenish-black, charcoal gray or dark bluish tones as well.
They thrive in full sun but can do okay in a bit of shade; so long as it receives plenty of sunlight. However, they are sensitive to strong winds, so they will need some shielding during breezy weather conditions.
Each individual tends to hold onto small clumps of seed cones along its branches that may resemble a deformity or disease. But this is a natural occurrence on all healthy plants of this species. They do slough off over time and are obscured by new growth.
This cultivar is sometimes seen listed in the nursery trade as 'Chairman' or 'The Chairman,' which are clearly misspellings of its official cultivar name of 'Chirimen'. But sometimes there are mentions of this being labeled as 'Habari' as well. It was chosen as one of the American Conifer Society's Collector's Conifer of the Year Program in 2011.
