Cork Bark Oaks or (Cork Oaks for short) is a fun bonsai species to work with if you wish to take care of a living fossil tree. In the Mediterranean basin, this tree is an ancient species with fossil remnants dating back to the Tertiary period! Larger farmed trees are known for producing a unique thick spongy bark from which wine bottle stoppers have been made for centuries.
In bonsai, their distinctive gray-brown rough & knobby-looking bark gives smaller-sized trees a more aged look. Their twiggy branches naturally develop good ramifications. Their small-sized foliage growth is dense with the upper side of the leaf having a light green color and the underside of the leaf has a whitish color with a hairy texture.
New leaves tend to appear in April and May when older leaves are also shed. They usually stay on the tree for 2 to 3 years, less often only 1 year if exposed to severe cold conditions. Extremely chilly winters with frosts can also lead to complete defoliation. They are a warm climate-loving species!
Please note that Cork Bark Oaks can develop a bit of a reverse taper in its trunk if not monitored. This is a known issue as Cork Oak barks don’t "cork up" as much below the surface of the soil. Exposing the lower part of the trunk to the full sun will encourage the better corking formation and eventually overcome any reverse tapers.
