For deciduous trees such as Maples, they were already starting their leaf color changes where they are transitioning to drop them to go into dormancy for the winter. When the new replacement leaves appear next spring, we will take new photos to better show each species great beauty!

Please be aware that the actual tree that you receive during the winter time may have no leaves during its dormancy period! A bare tree look is to be expected when placing orders at this time!

Japanese Maples are a traditional favorite for bonsai lovers all over the world. With their dynamic visual differences every season, it's always something new to look at with Maples. Especially their famous colorful transitions as they shed their soft foliage during the fall months. They do that to get ready to go dormant for the winter since all Maples are deciduous trees.

'Sharp's Pygmy' is an amazing choice for those that want a compact little leaf Maple bonsai! It's one of the smallest Acer palmatum cultivars found. This makes for an outstanding choice for use as bonsai because it naturally likes to grow into a bonsai-like appearance! Not much pruning or wire training to achieve the look! Jimmy Sharp first noticed it as a chance seedling in the early 1980s and propagated it at his nursery in Oregon.

The small five-lobed leaves have narrow "finger-like" lobes where they are very deeply divided for a showy appearance. The edges have a coarse broad teeth with a dark red color. The leaf lobe tips tend to curve down for a nice overall foliage texture. The short, slender leaf stalks and shoots are green. The green leaves turns into a deep orange to scarlet red in the fall, as seen in our November 2022 example photos of when we first brought them into our nursery from Iseli Nursery in Oregon.

Adopt a gentle hand when pruning after all of its foliage has fully developed during the warm summer months due to its very slow growth pattern. It can a very long time develop good ramification. But this is great for those that wish to maintain a small sized Maple bonsai. This pre-bonsai can easily be trained into an informal upright bonsai style. Please note that all pre-bonsai trees will come in a plastic nursery growing pot.

For Deciduous Trees: Please note that during the mid to late fall months, deciduous trees will lose all of their leaves/foliage to go into dormancy for winter. They will have barren branches and will be extra sensitive to shipping stress during mid-fall and all of winter. If we try to ship them during this dormancy time, it is considered extremely high risk. We reserve the right to refuse to take orders for these trees during their dormancy period from around October to February.

House of Bonsai reserves the right to delay on shipping any live plant order by several days to a few weeks; in order to attempt to decrease the high risk of major shipping related stress that may shock the plants during extreme weather conditions (too hot or cold). If we are purposely delaying your order because of this, we will notify you via email. Before you submit an order, please be mindful of your local weather and time of year. If there is major damage (ex: plant is dead or many branches are broken), please contact your third party shipping carrier (ex: USPS, FedEx, UPS) to submit an insurance claim with them as we are not able to assist with that matter. The fault is with the third party shipping carrier for such damage since it happened out of our hands. We are not responsible for any damages after the order leaves our facility since they were out of our control. If the bonsai tree is still alive but weakened due to shock (leaves are yellow-brownish or leaves have fallen off) then we are happy to assist in proving post-delivery plant shock care instructions via email to revive the plant. Please notify us by email of the issue within 48 hours upon receiving the order in hand. Please email us at houseofbonsai@gmail.com with your Order # and the keywords "Shock After Delivery" in the title so we can assist ASAP. For further details, please read our full "Shipping, Return & Cancellation Policy" under Our Policies in our top menu.
