The Japanese Zelkova is a clean and compact tree to work on that's native to Japan, Korea, eastern China and Taiwan. It's a closely related cousin to the Elm (ulmus) species since it resides in the same family "Ulmaceae". It's known for its strong growth and serrated edge leaves. It has a short but twisted trunk that tapers at the top into long delicately formed straight branches. Japanese Zelkovas grows extremely tiny green flowers when it grows new foliage in the spring. In the fall, the leaf color can range through shades of yellow, orange, bronze and crimson; making this quite the colorful bonsai for a short period.
