Originally from Europe and Asia, boxwoods are one of the oldest known garden plants, dating back to 4000 BC. The common name of boxwood refers to the wood used to make carved decorative boxes. It is native to southern China where it is often found growing in open wooded areas and stream margins. Sometimes it's been called 'Taiwanese Boxwood'.
The extra small bright green leaves and rough "cracked" light-colored bark give this tree a great impression of old age. With its tight slow growth, it keeps its full-looking rounded shape very well. As it grows its branches it tends to grow a tad taller than wider overall. During the late spring, they produce fragrant pale yellow flowers blooming around April to May.
It's one of the few heat-tolerant bonsai varieties we have; quite hardy and forgiving to beginners in warm climates. It doesn’t like to be in cold weather as much as it’s sensitive to chills and frost. They leaf out early and are tolerant of heavy pruning, which should be done after the last frost. Pruning too early in spring often promotes tender new growth that may be damaged or killed by a late spring frost.
