This Chinese Elm is perhaps one of the best and most popular types of bonsai; thanks to their easy care nature. Their tiny leaf size and fine branch ramification make for an adorable yet detailed tree. It's is a semi-deciduous species that is native to China, Korea, and Japan. It starts losing its leaves in late fall to early winter in hotter and drier climates, but retaining its foliage in milder climates. The leaves are glossy, thin with delicate rounded serrated leaf edge, and dark green in color with an alternating leaf arrangement on its ultra fine branches. The foliage turns a yellowish-brown before falling from the tree in cold weather. This elm variety has beautiful grayish-green, mottled bark that slowly sheds with age; displaying varying shades of brown on its trunk and primary branches.
For this medium size of Chinese Elm, it was originally imported from Asia to our bonsai nursery in The United States. However we've taken the time to continue its branch development to increase its beauty for your enjoyment.
