The Japanese Black Pine is one of the most popular traditional tree choices for an Asian Garden Landscape yard design. It's a strong species that tolerates wind, heat, drought and salt. Their needles have a rich deep emerald to dark green color and grows dense on its branches. It develops lime green candles in late spring that change into a dark brown color in mid fall.
Older needles will shed during mid to late fall. As the tree ages, the young gray branches turn dark black-brown with scale plates all over the trunk and larger branches. This gives it a much older rustic look.
It thrives in full sun with moist yet well drained acidic soil but can accept some shade and some sandy soil. Once planted, water deeply regularly for the first 3 - 4 months to establish a strong root system. Once established, it can be watered less frequently. With additional training, they can grow taller and wider; according to personal needs of your yard.
Our Japanese Black Pine trees are some of our oldest styled bonsai in stock! These have been trained by us since the start of the nursery. We have a variety of classic shapes to choose from including informal upright and slanting styles.
Please note that in the example images of our Japanese Black Pines in a 25 gallon black plastic pot are considered to be the same size as our 24 inch wide wooden box ones.
